Shipping

Orders ship daily (Monday - Friday) from our facility in Sacramento, CA.

It takes one business day to receive and process your order. Your order will ship the next business day with the exception of orders received after 5 PM Pacific Time on Thursday. Orders received after 5 PM (PST) on Thursday will ship on Monday. 

You can expect your order to arrive within 3 - 7 business days after submitting it (United States) and 10 - 14 business days (U.S. Territories, APO/FPO, Canada, Germany, UK, & Australia). 

What is 'Best Rate' Shipping?

We will pick from a variety of shipping carriers depending on what is most economical and efficient. For most orders, this means USPS Priority Mail, which takes about 3 days for delivery.

  • Domestic orders, General Delivery, PO BOX, APO/FPO ship USPS Priority Mail (2 - 3 day transit). Check USPS Priority delivery time map for more information on delivery time estimates. Origin Zipcode 95827. 
  • Large/Heavy domestic orders ship either FedEx Ground or UPS Ground (3 - 7 day transit). Check FedEx Ground delivery time map. Origin Zipcode 95827.
  • Canadian orders ship USPS Priority International/CanadaPost to avoid you having to pay brokerage fees charged by private carriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS). Note: Shipping USPS Priority International is not always possible due to weight/size limitations. Most international orders take 10 - 14 days to arrive. However, it can take up to 3 weeks if the package gets held up in the customs bottleneck (especially crossing through Windsor). We have no control over this process.
  • International orders ship USPS Priority International, which takes up to 14 days to arrive.
  • You are responsible for any import duties & taxes imposed by your country.
    • For Australia: There is no duty and sales tax charge if the total value of the order is less than AU$1000.00.
    • For Canada: There is no duty charge for dried foodstuff per the NAFTA free trade agreement. You are responsible for paying GST/HST, which varies based on your province. For an estimate of Sales Tax in Canada, please check this tool.
    • For Chile: Duty rate is 6% and VAT is 19%. Duty is based on the total shipping value, which includes the cost of the food, shipping, and insurance. VAT is 19% and is calculated on the sum of the total shipping value and duty fee.
    • For UK: Dried food is exempt of VAT. Duty is not charged if your order subtotal amount is less than £135; Otherwise, the import duty rate is 3.2%.
    • For Germany: There is no duty charge if the subtotal (value of goods) is less than €150. If above €150, the duty rate is 14.1% (HS Tarrif Code: 71290). You must pay VAT. The VAT rate = 19% and is based on total shipping value, which includes the value of goods, shipping, and insurance cost, plus any import duty fee.

Do you offer Expedited Shipping?

Expedited shipping is available, however product may require a 1-day processing time. If you need expedited shipping, please contact us or send us an email. We will inform you if the product can be shipped that day, the shipping charges, and the estimated arrival date. We cannot expedite orders on Fridays or weekends.

Shipping FAQs

 

How are shipping rates calculated?

The shipping rate is based on the total weight of your order and the region between our facility and your shipping address. Our checkout system calculates the total weight of your order based on the items in your cart. We do not add a processing fee. You can check the shipping charge on our website before placing an order by clicking View Cart and Estimate Shipping button. Shipping is not a profit center for our business. Our goal is to charge you only what it costs to deliver your product.

Where do you deliver?

We deliver to all destinations within the United States, U.S. Territories, overseas U.S. military bases with APO/FPO addresses, Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany & UK.

Do you ship outside the United States?

Yes, we ship to Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany, UK, U.S., U.S. Territories, U.S. military bases with APO/FPO addresses.

When shipping outside the United States, you will need to change the COUNTRY dropdown to your country before you can select your province/territory. When shipping to U.S. territories, select the United States in the country dropdown so you can choose the U.S. territory from the state dropdown.

Do you accept rush orders?

We can typically accommodate rush (next day) orders for an additional charge. Please contact us before placing your order so we can confirm items can be shipped, confirm delivery and provide you with the exact shipping charges.

Do you deliver to overseas military bases or APO/FPO?

Yes. All military orders ship United States Postal Service (USPS) Priority Mail.  Follow these instructions on the checkout form to ensure the order is processed correctly -

    • Designate Unit Name in Company field, if required
    • Designate Street Address with BoxCMR, Unit, or PSC Number
    • Designate APO or FPO in the City field
      • APO (Army or Air Force Base)
      • FPO (Navy or Marine Base)
    • Select "United States" as the Country
    • Select the correct Armed Forces location in the State/Province dropdown
      • Armed Forces Africa (AE) covers Europe, Africa, Canada and the Middle East and is out of New York
      • Armed Forces Pacific (AP) covers Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Asia, Australia, etc.. and is out of San Francisco
      • Armed Forces America (AA) covers Central America, South America, and the Caribbean and is out of Miami

What if my package is refused or undelivered?
 
Any package that is returned to us due to incorrect shipping information or refusal will incur an additional shipping charge for re-transit.
 

Do you deliver to the U.S. Post Office, General Delivery, a Post Office Box, Hotel/Hostel, or Alternate Address?

Yes, we can ship your order to a post office or business location near the trail. You are responsible for ensuring the shipping address of the business location is correct and that the business will hold your package until your ETA. 

We ship all packages 7 calendar days prior to your noted ETA to ensure the package arrives in time. If you need a packaged overnighted/rushed, please contact us before placing an order. If your shipping location only accepts UPS and this is not a shipping option during the checkout, please let us know in the checkout comments 'Ship UPS only'. Note: additional charges may apply for UPS rural deliveries.

How do I ship packages to be Held for Thru Hikers or General Delivery?

Reference the name of the Hiker that will be picking up the package within the Shipping Address. Keep in mind that most post office and business locations require validation of identity in order to pick-up held packages. The post office will hold the mail up to 30 calendar days so you do not need to be exact on your expected pick-up date.

For Post Office/General Delivery: The General Delivery address look-up can be found on the USPS website (On the form, type 'General Delivery' as the Street Address, along with the location City and State), which displays the post office location and address format. See also post offices near the trail for research. Generally, the main post office location is the one that handles all General Delivery mail and is identified by a zip code that ends with the 4 digit -9999. Once you have the correct General Delivery shipping address, fill out the details on our checkout form:

  • Uncheck the box 'Billing Address same as shipping address' on the checkout form in order to display the Shipping Address field
  • Type the First and Last Name of the Hiker that will be picking up the package
  • Select 'United States' in the Country dropdown
  • Type 'General Delivery' as the Street Address Line 1
  • Type the city, state, and ZIP of the main post office that handles General Delivery. Note that there may be several post offices in larger cities which use the same ZIP code, but only one is the "main" post office (usually the main office is the only location that handles General Delivery). If you are not sure which post office to use, call USPS at 1-800-275-8777 to ask or check the USPS website. Generally, the main post office location zip code ends with the 4 digit -9999.
  • Provide the Estimated Date (ETA) you want the package delivered/picked up in the comments field. We will handwrite the Hiker's Last Name and ETA on the outside of the shipping box.
  • If your shipping location only accepts UPS and that is not an option during checkout, please let us know "ship UPS only" in the checkout comments field. Note: additional charges may apply for UPS rural deliveries.

Post Office Shipping Instructions (Thru Hiker):

For Business Location/Lodging Delivery: See resupply locations near the trail for researching business hold locations, such as stores, park offices, hotels, and campgrounds. If you already know the delivery address, fill out the details on our checkout form: 

  • Uncheck the box 'Billing Address same as shipping address' on the checkout form in order to display the Shipping Address field
  • Type the First and Last Name of the Hiker that will be picking up the package
  • Select 'United States' in the Country dropdown
  • Type C/O Business Name in Company field
  • Type the Street Address Line 1
  • Type the city, state, and ZIP code. 
  • Provide the Estimated Date (ETA) you want the package delivered/picked up in the comments field. We will handwrite the Hiker's Last Name and ETA on the outside of the shipping box.
  • If your shipping location only accepts UPS and that is not an option during checkout, please let us know "ship UPS only" in the checkout comments field. Note: additional charges may apply for UPS rural deliveries.

If I order now, can you deliver product to various locations and ship dates in the future?

Yes. You can do this online by making separate purchases for each location. Make sure you identify your ETA for each order. We will ship all packages 7 calendar days before your ETA to ensure they arrive in time.

Do you need to ship to multiple locations at different times, have a question about delivering to a thru-hiker, don't want to use the web form, or have some other special need?

We are flexible and friendly, just send us an email and we'll be happy to assist.  Please use our online Contact us form if you have any questions or would like to speak to us.

Why does your box say Amazon or some other retailer?

Outdoor Herbivore believes in the importance of preserving trees and natural resources so future generations can experience the essence of the natural world. We strive to lessen our environmental impact as much as possible. One way we take action for the environment is by recycling, reducing, and reusing items whenever possible. That is why when you order from us your shipment may arrive in a cardboard box labeled “Amazon” or some other retailer. We reuse boxes when appropriate and recycle those that cannot be reused. We hope you will do the same. 

Do you offer local pick-up?

Can I pick up my order at your store in Sacramento, CA?

We are a manufacturer and do not have a retail store or pick-up support at our location. If you prefer shopping at a local store, or to view our products before purchasing, please shop locally at The Bicycle Business located at 3077 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento, CA. This store carries a selection of our popular meals.
