Shipping

Orders ship daily (Monday - Friday) from our facility in Sacramento, CA.

It takes one business day to receive and process your order. Orders placed Monday through Thursday ship the next business day. Orders placed Friday (after 11 AM Pacific Timethrough Sunday will ship the following Monday. 

You can expect your order to arrive within 3 - 7 business days after submitting it (United States) and 10 - 14 business days (U.S. Territories, APO/FPO Military, and outside the USA).

What is your holiday shipping schedule?

Orders placed on a holiday will be shipped immediately after the holiday (during our normal business hours). Our holidays (subject to change):

For Delivery by Christmas (in the USA), please order by December 12th (Free Shipping), December 14th (Best Rate Shipping), December 17th (FedEx 2-Day Shipping). For international orders, place orders by December 5th. Keep in mind that we can not guarantee orders will be delivered by a specific date due to the high shipping volume by carriers during the holidays.

Do you have free shipping?

Free Shipping is an option for orders over $200. The offer will show at checkout. Free shipping uses economy ground shipping and is valid in the contiguous USA only. This offer does not apply to promotional offers, sales, or other discounted pricing.

What is 'Best Rate' shipping?

We will pick from a variety of shipping carriers depending on what is most economical and efficient. For most orders, this means either USPS Priority Mail or FedEx, which takes 3 to 5 days for delivery. Lightweight orders will ship USPS First Class Mail. General Delivery, PO BOX, APO/FPO usually ship USPS Priority Mail. All packages are shipped from Sacramento, California.

Do you offer expedited shipping?

Yes! We use FedEx for expedited shipping; however, orders may require a 1-day processing time. We cannot expedite orders on Friday afternoons or weekends. Express/2-Day shipping is processed Monday-Friday AM onlyIf you need expedited same-day shipping, please contact us first. We will inform you if the product can ship out on that day and the arrival date. You can also let us know in the order checkout comments when you need the order to arrive. Do you ship internationally (outside the USA)?

We ship to Australia, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, UK, overseas U.S. military bases with APO/FPO addresses and U.S. Territories. For U.S. territories/APO/FPO, select United States as the country to select your state/territory. For help with shipping to military bases, see our APO/FPO mailing instructions.

International orders ship International Post or FedEx/UPS, which takes up to 14 days to arrive. If you need your order sooner, please select FedEx which delivers in 5 - 7 business days. International delivery times are not guaranteed. Shipments can be delayed at customs.

International orders may be subject to import fees such as duties, taxes, and tariffs depending on the destination country’s laws and regulations. Often, you can avoid paying a Customs Duty or Import VAT if your order total stays below a certain threshold. ALL orders shipped to the EU are subject to VAT regardless of the order total. Orders above €150 will incur an import duty and VAT. The VAT amount varies based on your country. We've put together the information below to help you understand the fee. Keep in mind that this information changes frequently and you are responsible for any import duties & taxes imposed by your country. We do not accept returns on international shipments. Orders returned or unclaimed at customs will not be refunded.

VAT/Duties as of Jan 2023. 

  • Australia: No taxes regardless of order value. Under the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA), the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for our products is 0%. Duties are exempt for orders under AUD1000. 
  • Canada: Duties are exempt for dried vegetarian foodstuff coming from California, USA but you will be subject to any applicable federal and provincial taxes (GST/HST). You are responsible for paying GST/HST, which varies based on your province. Most of our Canadian customers pay from 12 to 15% of the food total (Taxes in BC=12% and Ontario=13%). View Sales Tax in Canada by checking this tool.  Note: We try to ship Canada orders via USPS Priority International/CanadaPost to avoid you having to pay the brokerage fee charged by private carriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS). In some cases, we must use a private carrier due to weight/size limitation. Do you have a large order planned? Contact us to get the total landed cost.
  • Chile: Duty rate is 6% and VAT is 19%. Duty is based on the total shipping value, which includes the cost of the food, shipping, and insurance. VAT is 19% and is calculated on the sum of the total shipping value and duty fee.
  • Hong Kong: No duties and/or taxes are collected.
  • UK: No duties if your order subtotal amount is less than £135; Otherwise, the import duty rate is 3.2%. No VAT.
  • Germany: There is no duty charge if the subtotal (value of goods) is less than €150. If above €150, the duty rate is 10.2% (HS Tariff Code: 071290). You must pay VAT. The VAT rate = 19% and is based on total shipping value, which includes the value of goods, shipping, and insurance cost, plus any import duty fee.
  • Israel: There is no duty charge or VAT if the subtotal (value of goods) is less than 75 USD. If above 75 USD, the duty rate is 5% and VAT rate is 17%. 
  • Mexico: There is no duty charge for dried foodstuff per the NAFTA free trade agreement. Orders above 1000 MXN have a 16% tax.
  • New Zealand: There is no duty, GST, or other charges if the order total (items + shipping) is less than $400 NZD because that keeps the GST (15%) + Tariff (0% for dried meals) to $60 NZD or less. If your order exceeds $400 NZD/ $60 GST, you'll have to pay the full GST (15%) plus an import entry transaction fee and MPI levy. For an estimate of Sales Tax for NZ, please check this tool.
  • Netherlands: There is no duty charge if the subtotal (value of goods) is less than €150. If above €150, the duty rate is 10.2% (HS Tariff Code: 071290). You must pay a VAT. The VAT rate = 21% and is based on total shipping value, which includes the value of goods, shipping, and insurance cost, plus any import duty fee.
  • Norway: There is no duty or taxes if the subtotal (value of goods) is less than 350 NOK. If order is above 350 NOK, the VAT rate = 25% and is based on total shipping value, which includes the value of goods, shipping, and insurance cost, plus any import duty fee.
  • Singapore: Singapore's de minimis value is 400 SGD. If your total order is valued over 400 SGD, you may be subject to a 7% Singapore tax.
  • Portugal: There is no duty charge if the subtotal (value of goods) is less than €150. If above €150, the duty rate is 9% (HS Tariff Code: 071290). There is a tax/VAT for orders above €22. The VAT rate = 23% and is based on total shipping value, which includes the value of goods, shipping, and insurance cost, plus any import duty fee.
  • Spain: There is no duty charge if the subtotal (value of goods) is less than €150. If above €150, the duty rate is 9% (HS Tariff Code: 071290). There is a tax/VAT for orders above €22. The VAT rate = 21% and is based on total shipping value, which includes the value of goods, shipping, and insurance cost, plus any import duty fee.
  • Sweden:  There is no duty charge if the subtotal (value of goods) is less than €150. If above €150, the duty rate is 14.1% (HS Tariff Code: 071290). You must pay a VAT. The VAT rate = 25% and is based on total shipping value, which includes the value of goods, shipping, and insurance cost, plus any import duty fee.
  • Switzerland: Switzerland has a unique way of calculating duty rates and is based on the parcel weight and product class. Generally, you must pay a 2.5% VAT on orders exceeding CHF300. Please see this tool for more information. HS Tariff Code: 071290

How do I ship packages to be held for Thru Hikers or General Delivery?

Reference the name of the Hiker that will be picking up the package in the Shipping Address. Keep in mind that most post office and business locations require validation of identity in order to pick-up held packages. The post office will hold packages up to 30 calendar days so you do not need to be exact on your expected pick-up date.

For Post Office/General Delivery: The General Delivery address look-up can be found on the USPS website (On the form, type 'General Delivery' as the Street Address, along with the location City and State), which displays the post office location and address format. See also post offices near the trail for research. Some cities have multiple post offices and only one location is reserved to accept General Delivery. Often, the main post office location is the one that handles all General Delivery mail and is identified by a zip code that ends with the 4 digit -9999. Once you have the correct General Delivery shipping address, fill out the details on our checkout form:

  • Uncheck the box 'Billing Address same as shipping address' on the checkout form in order to display the Shipping Address field
  • Type the First and Last Name of the Hiker that will be picking up the package
  • Select 'United States' as the Country
  • Type 'General Delivery' as the Street Address Line 1
  • Type the city, state, and ZIP of the main post office that handles General Delivery. Note that there may be several post offices in larger cities which use the same ZIP code, but only one is the "main" post office (usually the main office is the only location that handles General Delivery). If you are not sure which post office to use, call USPS at 1-800-275-8777 to ask or check the USPS website. Generally, the main post office location zip code ends with the 4 digit -9999.
  • Provide the Estimated Date (ETA) you want the package delivered/picked up in the comments field. We will handwrite the Hiker's Last Name and ETA on the outside of the shipping box.

For Business Location/Lodging Delivery (Not a Post Office General Delivery): See resupply locations near the trail for researching business hold locations, such as stores, park offices, hotels, and campgrounds. Business locations on the PCT such as Red’s Meadow ResortVermillion Valley Resort, Muir Trail Ranch, Mt Williamson Motel, Parchers Resort, Shelter Cove Resort, Elk Lake Resort, and Stevens Pass have specific shipping instructions and requirements (buckets, hold ticket, fees, FedEx/UPS only) to receive your order. Please check these businesses to understand what is required. If you already know the delivery address, fill out the details on our checkout form:

  • Uncheck the box 'Billing Address same as shipping address' on the checkout form in order to display the Shipping Address field
  • Type the First and Last Name of the Hiker that will be picking up the package
  • Select 'United States' as the Country
  • Type C/O Business Name in Company field
  • Type the Street Address Line 1

If I order now, can you deliver product to various locations and ship dates in the future?

Yes. You can do this online by making separate purchases for each location. Make sure you identify your ETA for each order. We will ship all packages 7 calendar days before your ETA to ensure they arrive in time.If you are planning for a thru-hike: We recommend you create an account on our website, enter all your planned resupply locations by clicking 'Your Address Book' and the add a new address. When you are ready to order, these shipping addresses will appear in the checkout Shipping Address drop down. 
 
Do you need to ship to multiple locations at different times, have a question about delivering to a thru-hiker, don't want to use the web form, or have some other special need?We are flexible and friendly, just send us an email and we'll be happy to assist.  Please use our online Contact us form if you have any questions or would like to speak to us.
Yes, we are open for pick-ups Monday - Friday from 10 am to 2 PM at 4621 Orange Grove Ave in Sacramento, CA. Please place your order online and select the pick-up option.

Do you deliver to the Post Office, General Delivery, a Post Office Box, Hotel/Hostel, or Alternate Address?

Yes, we can ship your order to a post office or business location for you to pick up. You are responsible for ensuring the shipping address of the business location is correct and that the business will hold your package. Please provide us your estimated pick-up date 'ETA' in the order comments.

We ship all packages 7 calendar days prior to your noted ETA to ensure the package arrives in time. If you need a packaged delivered the next day, please contact us before placing an order. If your shipping location only accepts UPS/FedEx and this is not a shipping option during the checkout, please let us know in the checkout comments 'Ship FedEx only'. Note: additional charges may apply for rural deliveries.

I live in a rural area and want your Best Rate Shipping option. How do I input my address since I don't know what carrier you will use? FedEx/UPS will deliver to my house, however the Post Office/USPS will not.

In this case, please give us both addresses when you complete your order. Use your PO BOX as the first address and your street address as the second address. For instance, 

  • Address Line 1: PO BOX 1234 
  • Address Line 2: 14554 Rural Ln

We'll use your street address for private carrier and your PO Box for USPS. Which carrier we use depends on which option is more economical.

If you only give us a PO BOX and not your street address, we may ship FedEx/UPS to the your local post office.

Do you deliver to overseas military bases or APO/FPO?

Yes. All military orders ship United States Postal Service (USPS) Priority Mail.  Follow these instructions on the checkout form to ensure the order is processed correctly -

Designate Unit Name in Company field, if required
Include the Unit Number, Box, CMR, or PSC Number (where applicable) into Address Line 1
Designate APO or FPO in the City field. APO = Army or Air Force Base; FPO = Navy or Marine Base;
Select the correct Armed Forces location as the State/Province.

  • Armed Forces Europe (AE) covers Europe, Africa, Canada, & the Middle East and is processed in New York.
  • Armed Forces Pacific (AP) covers Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Asia, & Australia and is processed in San Francisco.
  • Armed Forces America (AA) covers Central America, South America, and the Caribbean and is processed in Miami.

How are shipping rates calculated?

The shipping rate is based on a combination of the weight of your order, the order total, and the region between our facility and your shipping address. You can check the shipping charge on our website before placing an order by clicking View Cart and Estimate Shipping button. We do not make a profit from shipping charges.

Can you ship with my own carrier?

No. FedEx/UPS/Post Office are the only carriers we use.

Can you rush orders? I need next day delivery!

We can often accommodate rush (next day) orders for an additional charge. Please contact us before placing your order so we can confirm items can be shipped, confirm delivery and provide you with the exact shipping charges.

What if my package is refused or undelivered?

Outdoor Herbivore is not responsible for incorrect shipping address provided by the customer. Any package that is returned to us due to incorrect shipping information or refusal will incur an additional shipping charge for re-transit.

What if my package shows delivered but I didn't get it?

Outdoor Herbivore is not responsible for packages that get lost or stolen after they are marked as delivered or delivery errors made by the carrier. Please file any claim(s) with the carrier for damaged/lost/stolen shipments.

Why does your box display another brand?

Outdoor Herbivore believes in the importance of preserving trees and natural resources so future generations can experience the essence of the natural world. We strive to lessen our environmental impact as much as possible. One way we take action for the environment is by recycling, reducing, and reusing items whenever possible. That is why when you order from us your shipment may arrive in a cardboard box labeled “Amazon” or some other retailer. We reuse boxes when appropriate and recycle those that cannot be reused. We hope you will do the same.
