Outdoor Herbivore was incorporated in 2009 while developing dried meals for backpacking and outdoor recreational use. The business is based in Charlotte, NC with product testing subjected to all weather extremes in the Appalachian Mountain Range of Western North Carolina.

Our Process

Outdoor Herbivore selects/dehydrates whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and combines them into meals for your enjoyment. Whether you want healthy, quick meals at home, the office, or to take along for outdoor activities such as backpacking, paddling, camping, cycling, Outdoor Herbivore is an excellent choice. What makes us different:

Natural, Whole-Food Dried Ingredients. Outdoor Herbivore uses a combination of dehydrated and freeze-dried whole-food ingredients - the plant food nature provides us, unaltered. This means we do not use processed (refined/enriched) foods. No flavor enhancers, preservatives, MSG, stabilizers, fillers, sulfites, nitrates, GMO's, TVP, or other artificial ingredients.

All Vegetarian. Plant based dried meals suitable for vegetarians or health-conscious diets. Most of our products are vegan.

Flavor Variety. We season our products with a blend of herbs and spices resulting in flavor variety with less sodium.

Certified Organic Ingredients. We believe organic farming practices are the most responsible method for nurturing our land and body; over 80% of our ingredients are organically grown within the United States, however is not always possible or necessary to use 100% organic. We will let you know when we do or do not use an organic ingredient. We never use GMO ingredients.

Eco Light Packaging. Meals are packaged in light, non-gusseted resealable poly bags to save on weight and space for backpacking. Minimal yet durable packaging suited for wilderness travel.

No-Cooking and Fast-Cooking Meal Options. Easy to prepare dehydrated meals - just add water. One-pot style cooking convenience.

"It was my interest in organic food and passion for the outdoors which guided me to focus my efforts into Outdoor Herbivore.”

Our founder, Kim Safdy, is an avid backpacker and cyclist, who enjoys hiking several days through remote wilderness areas and dining on gourmet cuisine at her campsite. Frustrated by the lack of wholesome vegetarian camping foods available on the market, she decided to address this need with her own products. While Kim is not a nutritionist, her engineering background allows her to analyze food and devise recipe combination's suited for long-term storage and wilderness travel. Kim has put her mastery to work in order to combine whole grains, vegetables, spices, and herbs to impart tasty, distinct flavors with influences from around the globe. She is a strong supporter of the organic food movement and local farming practices. Therefore, the ingredients are organic and sourced locally whenever possible. As a health and wilderness advocate, Kim resolves to promote healthy eating and compassionate living both on and off the trail. She authors a blog, which accounts her outdoor adventures and gives readers her perspective on food, health, and everyday life. -
